Syrian refugees in Denmark

Priority question for written answer  P-002068/2021/rev.1
to the Commission
Rule 138
Janina Ochojska (PPE)

Since the Danish authorities reclassified some parts of Syria as safe for return, the residency permits of several hundred Syrians from those regions have been revoked or simply not renewed. Denmark is home to 35 000 Syrian immigrants and is the only country in the EU to have revoked Syrians’ residency permits. According to the policy, as soon as the situation allows, refugees’ residency permits are to be withdrawn or no longer extended and they are to return to their home country. The Danish authorities have justified the decision on the basis of a report that found that the security situation in some parts of Syria had ‘improved significantly’. However, areas under the Assad regime are still unstable. Returnees face the risk of serious attacks and persecution. Syrians who refuse to leave Denmark voluntarily end up in Danish deportation camps without the possibility to work or study, and without proper healthcare.
