Psychosis, a condition marked by a loss of touch with reality, is distressing for those who experience it and their loved ones. If left untreated, psychosis can have serious impacts on people's lives. But the good news is there's hope. In the latest Mental Health Matters podcast, we talk with Dr. Robert Heinssen, a leader in the development and adoption of coordinated specialty care for treating psychosis. We learn about the signs and symptoms of psychosis, discuss coordinated specialty care, and explore how NIMH research in psychosis and schizophrenia fundamentally changed the health care landscape. An NIMH-funded research consortium has produced the largest and most advanced multidimensional maps of gene regulation networks in the brains of people with and without mental disorders. “These groundbreaking findings advance our understanding of where, how, and when genetic risk contributes to mental disorders such as schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression,” said Joshua A. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., NIMH Director. Read more: https://go.nih.gov/ZPIapRa.

Most of the time, behavioral expressions of anger and frustration are considered normal in children, but research has shown that high levels of irritability can be an early predictor of later mental illness. So, how can families and health care providers tell if a child’s irritability is a cause for concern? NIMH-supported research captures expressions of irritability across developmental stages via a clinically relevant measurement tool: the MAPS Temper Loss Scale. https://go.nih.gov/uNXdhDy

This Request for Information (RFI) from NIH seeks input from healthcare providers, scientific research communities, patient advocacy groups, people with lived experience of brain or behavioral health disorders (e.g., substance use and mental health disorders), educators, and other interested parties. We invite your input on identifying and addressing gaps in the impact of structural racism on brain, cognitive (e.g., learning, memory, attention, decision-making), and behavioral function across the lifespan, and the role of structural and systemic racism on the conduct of brain and behavioral health research. Please respond by June 14, 2024! https://go.nih.gov/3S56Exf
