About us
Welcome to the official LinkedIn page of the U.S. Fire Administration! As an entity of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, the mission of the U.S. Fire Administration is to provide national leadership to foster a solid foundation for our fire and emergency services stakeholders in prevention, preparedness and response. America’s fire losses today represent a dramatic improvement from more than 40 years ago. In 1971, our nation lost more than 12,000 residents and 250 firefighters to fire. Acting to stop these tragic losses, Congress passed the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act in 1974. It created the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Fire Academy (NFA). Since that time, through data collection, public education, research and training efforts, USFA has helped to reduce fire deaths and make our communities and residents safer.

On May 17, 1923, a fire swept through the Cleveland School located near Camden, SC, claiming the lives of 77 children and adults. The enormity of the loss sparked widespread public concern, directing attention towards fire safety in assembly spaces. This outcry led to the implementation of legislation that influenced building and fire codes not just in South Carolina but across the nation. During the 2023 U.S. Fire Administrator's Summit on Fire Prevention & Control, the "A Town on Fire" creators filmed interviews with the U.S. Fire Administrator and national fire and life safety leaders to honor those lost and testify to how this fire changed the national fire service. Yesterday brought the inaugural World Fire Congress (WFC) to a close. 56 countries came together in Washington, D.C. to establish a path for the voices of first responders to be heard around the world. Our Nation's capital served as the perfect backdrop for the group to collaborate on four main issues facing fire services: structure fire, wildfire and climate change, emerging energy technology and firefighter health and safety. The audience was addressed on Tuesday by FEMA Administrator, Deanne Criswell - “I look around me and I see a first-of-its kind network of leaders dedicated to mitigating the effects of fires on people, on our first responders, and our planet. So today, we are committing to this collaboration.” On Wednesday the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas spoke at the closing event about the importance of global cooperation to improve global public safety from a homeland security perspective and recognized fire as a threat to homeland and national security. As the event, which took place at the Library of Congress, came to a close the delegates ceremoniously signed the Founding Statements of Principles and passed the gavel to the United Kingdom, who will host the next WFC in 2026. #WorldFC24 #FireServiceOneVoice
