Poets featured in The Great World of Days will read selections from the new book published by Day Eight Books. Day Eight is an arts producer and publisher based in Washington, D.C. Four poets will read from the collection and copies of the book will be available for sale.
Holly Karapetkova is the Poet Laureate of Arlington County and the recipient of a 2022 Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship. She is the author of two books of poetry, Words We Might One Day Say, winner of the 2010 Washington Writers’ Publishing House Poetry Award, and Towline, winner of the 2016 Vern Rutsala Poetry Contest from Cloudbank Books. Her current manuscript projects, Still Life With White and Planter’s Wife grapple with the deep wounds left by our history of racism, slavery, and environmental destruction. She is also the author of over 20 books for children. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing and a PhD in English and Comparative Literature and teaches in the Department of Literature and Languages at Marymount University.
J.D. Smith has published six collections of poetry, most recently the light verse collection Catalogs for Food Lovers, and has received a Fellowship in Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts. His first fiction collection, Transit, will be published in December. Smith lives and works in Washington, DC.
Susan Bucci Mockler's poetry has appeared in several literary journals, including the Maryland Literary Review, peachvelvet, Maximum Tilt, Pilgrimage Press, Crab Orchard Review, Poet Lore, The Northern Virginia Review, Gargoyle, The Delmarva Review, The Beltway Poetry Quarterly, The Cortland Review, The Paterson Literary Review, Lunch Ticket, Voices in Italian Americana, and several anthologies. She is currently at work on the project, Many Voices, One Community: The Healing Power of Poetry, supported by a grant from the Arlington Arts Commission. She has been a poet in the Arlington Public Schools and teaches writing at local universities. Her poetry collection, Covenant (With) is due out from Kelsay Books later this year.
Yvette Neisser is the author of two poetry collections: Iron into Flower (forthcoming in 2022 from Finishing Line Press) and Grip (2011 Gival Press Poetry Award). Her translations from Spanish include South Pole/Polo Sur by María Teresa Ogliastri and Difficult Beauty: Selected Poems by Luis Alberto Ambroggio. Her poems, translations, and essays have appeared in Foreign Policy in Focus, Palestine-Israel Journal, Virginia Quarterly Review, 101 Jewish Poems for the Third Millennium, and Split This Rock’s The Quarry, among others. She has taught writing at George Washington University and The Writer’s Center (Bethesda, MD), and has worked in international development and research for more than twenty years.
