The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently released several new funding opportunities to support the mental health of children, youth, and young adults.

Assertive Community Treatment


SHORT TITLE: ACT


Application Due Date: Monday, April 10, 2023


Summary: The purpose of this program is to establish or expand and maintain ACT programs for transition-aged youth and adults with a serious mental illness (SMI) or serious emotional disturbance (SED).


Eligible Applicants: Eligibility is statutorily limited to states, political subdivisions of states (e.g., counties, cities), community-based behavioral health non-profit organizations, Indian tribes, or tribal organizations (as defined in Section 4 of the Indian Self- Determination and Education Assistance Act), mental health systems, and health care facilities.


Anticipated Award Amount: Up to $678,000 per year

Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education)


SHORT TITLE: AWARE


Application Due Date: Friday, April 28, 2023


Summary: The purpose of this program is to develop a sustainable infrastructure for school-based mental health programs and services. With this program, SAMHSA aims to promote the healthy social and emotional development of school-aged youth and prevent youth violence in school settings.


Eligible Applicants: Eligible entities are States; political subdivisions of States (e.g., county, LEA); Indian tribes or tribal organizations (as defined in section 5304 of title 25), health facilities, or programs operated by or in accordance with a contract or grant with the Indian Health Service, or other domestic public or private nonprofit entities).


Anticipated Award Amount: Up to $1,800,000 per year

Mental Health Awareness Training Grants


SHORT TITLE: MHAT


Application Due Date: Monday, May 1, 2023


Summary: The purpose of this program is to: (1) train individuals (e.g., school personnel and emergency services personnel including fire department and law enforcement personnel, veterans, armed services members and their families, etc.) to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders and how to safely de-escalate crisis situations involving individuals with a mental illness and (2) provide education on resources available in the community for individuals with a mental illness and other relevant resources, including how to establish linkages with school and/or community-based mental health agencies.


Eligible Applicants: Eligible applicants are States and Territories, including the District of Columbia, political subdivisions of States, Indian tribes, or tribal organizations (as such terms are defined in section 5304 of title 25), and non-profit private entities.


Anticipated Award Amount: Up to $200,000 per year

Planning and Developing Infrastructure to Promote the Mental Health of Children, Youth and Families in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Communities


SHORT TITLE: CIRCLES OF CARE


Application Due Date: Friday, May 5, 2023


Summary: The purpose of this program is to provide tribes and tribal organizations with tools and resources to plan and design a family-driven, community-based, and culturally and linguistically competent system of care.


Eligible Applicants: Federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) tribes and tribal organizations; Urban Indian Organizations; or consortia of tribes or tribal organizations; and Tribal colleges and universities (as identified by the American Indian Education Consortium).


Anticipated Award Amount: Up to $350,000 per year

Treatment for Individuals with Serious Mental Illness, Serious Emotional Disturbance or Co-Occurring Disorders Experiencing Homelessness


SHORT TITLE: TREATMENT FOR INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS


Application Due Date: Friday, May 5, 2023


Summary: The purpose of this program is to provide comprehensive, coordinated and evidenced-based services for individuals, youth, and families with a serious mental illness, serious emotional disturbance or co-occurring disorder who are experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of homelessness (e.g., people exiting jail or prison without a place to live).


Eligible Applicants: Eligible applicants are States and Territories, including the District of Columbia, political subdivisions of States, Indian tribes, or tribal organizations (as such terms are defined in section 5304 of title 25), health facilities, or programs operated by or in accordance with a contract or award with the Indian Health Service, or other public or private non-profit entities.


Anticipated Award Amount: $500,000-1,000,000 per year

Cooperative Agreements for School-Based Trauma-Informed Support Services and Mental Health Care for Children and Youth


SHORT TITLE: TISS


Application Due Date: Monday, May 8, 2023


Summary: The purpose of this program is to increase student access to evidence-based and culturally relevant trauma support services and mental health care by developing innovative initiatives, activities, and programs to link local school systems with local trauma-informed support and mental health systems, including those under the Indian Health Service.


Eligible Applicants: Eligibility is statutorily limited to State Education Agencies, Local Educational Agencies, and Indian Tribes (as defined in section 4 of the Indian Self-Determination and Education assistance Act) or their Tribal Educational Agencies, a school operated by the Bureau of Indian Education, a Regional Corporation, or a Native Hawaiian Educational Organization.


Anticipated Award Amount: Up to $970,000 per year

Healthy Transitions: Improving Life Trajectories for Youth and Young Adults with Serious Mental Disorders Program


SHORT TITLE: HEALTHY TRANSITIONS


Application Due Date: Monday, May 8, 2023


Summary: The purpose of this program is to improve and expand access to developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate services and supports for transition-aged youth and young adults (ages 16-25) who either have, or are at risk for developing, serious mental health conditions.


Eligible Applicants: Eligible applicants are States and Territories, including the District of Columbia; political subdivisions of States; Indian tribes, or tribal organizations (as such terms are defined in section 5304 of title 25), health facilities, or programs operated by or in accordance with a contract or award with the Indian Health Service; or other public or private non-profit entities.


Anticipated Award Amount: Up to $750,000 per year
