WASHINGTON – In a
new study on bipartisanship in the U.S. Senate released by Georgetown
University’s Lugar Center, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) ranked among the most
bipartisan senators for 2021. The Lugar Center’s Bipartisan Index placed
Grassley at number 12 of all 100 senators, making him the 5th most bipartisan Republican
in the Senate.
For nearly 30 years, Grassley has ranked
in the top 20 for bipartisanship in this study. In 2019, he also
ranked
among the most bipartisan senators of the last
quarter-century, clocking in at 14 of 250 senators who had served over a 26-year
period – putting him near the top five percent of bipartisan senators since
1993.
“During my annual 99 county meetings, I
hear from Iowans asking why we in Washington can’t get along. I let them know
that bipartisanship does happen – it just doesn’t get as much attention because
controversy makes news. For example, my efforts to bring price transparency to
the cattle market and lower the cost of prescription drugs are both bipartisan
efforts. When there’s a problem that needs solving, I will work with anyone to
get things done for Iowa. I will continue bringing common sense to Washington
and fostering bipartisanship to improve the lives of Iowans,” Grassley said.
The study was conducted by the Lugar
Center, founded by former Sen. Richard Lugar, and the McCourt School of Public
Policy at Georgetown University. According to the study, the index “measures
the frequency with which a Member co-sponsors a bill introduced by the opposite
party and the frequency with which a Member’s own bills attract co-sponsors
from the opposite party.”
