News from the Hudson River Estuary Program

For more than 30 years, DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program and its partners have focused on the collaborative work of protecting and restoring the Hudson and its watershed. Local communities, state and federal agencies, research institutions, environmental partners, watershed groups, and citizen science volunteers all share the vision of a healthy Hudson River. As we look forward to a strong 2020, we thank you for contributing to this progress.

In 2019, the Estuary Program provided more than $4.1 million in grant awards for 87 local projects in 143 locations.

  • 97 watershed communities in the Hudson Valley have now taken the Climate Smart Communities pledge; 67 are working on strategies to conserve floodplains, shorelines, or free-flowing streams; and 13 have adopted plans to manage flooding and habitat. We added 10 new communities this year.

  • We are now helping 50 Hudson Valley communities conserve natural resources and wildlife habitat, and 16 of them are actively implementing local land use projects and programs.

  • As of 2019, over 19,000 students, educators, and members of the public experienced the Hudson through our hands-on field programs, school programs, and video-link distance learning programs.

  • Since 1987, NYSDEC and our partners at State Parks have conserved 10,195 acres along or in sight of the Hudson, including 590 purchased this year in Stockport to protect habitat for birds, rare plants, and coastal and migratory fish.
