Heavy rains triggered a large mudflow in Isfana, Kyrgyzstan on May 2, 2020, damaging homes, roads, and gardens. A state of emergency has been declared for the town, as well as other areas in the southern region.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported major flash flooding in parts of the Leilek district in the Batken region. Videos on social media showed torrents of muddy floodwater and debris raging across the streets.

More than 60 rescuers were deployed in the town to deal with the mudflow's aftermath and clear the territory. "The civil protection commission is also at the scene, making household visits in order to detect the damage," said the Ministry.

"There are no victims of the mudflow in Isfana. Water flooded basements of four houses, gardens, and land plots of 10 houses, one private house was completely flooded. In addition, mudflows flooded the yard of a kindergarten."

On May 4, the Ministry announced that work is underway to dig a mudflow canal, as well as to strengthen an existing dam in the Issyk-Kul region.

Isfana is around 135 km (84 miles) of Sydrarya, where recent heavy downpour triggered a dam failure that led to the evacuation of more than 75 000 people in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
