2020 Demographic Analysis Estimates Press Kit

The 2020 Demographic Analysis estimates include national-level estimates of the population by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin as of April 1, 2020. These estimates are developed from current and historical vital statistics – birth and death records, estimates of international migration, and Medicare records. The Demographic Analysis estimates are independent from the 2020 Census and will be used to calculate net coverage error, one of the two main ways the U.S. Census Bureau uses population estimates to measure coverage of the census.

Experimental State and County Undercounts and Overcounts for Young Children in the 2020 Census

The U.S. Census Bureau released the Demographic Analysis estimates of state and county net coverage error for children ages 0 to 4 in the 2020 Census on April 11, 2024. This is the first time the Census Bureau is releasing these experimental Demographic Analysis estimates designed to help gauge the accuracy of the 2020 Census count of the nation’s youngest children.

Evaluating 2020 Census Quality

There are two main ways of evaluating the quality of a census—comparing the results to other population totals and evaluating how well the process of conducting the census worked. Demographic Analysis is one of the population totals used to compare against 2020 Census results. The Census Bureau is also currently conducting a Post-Enumeration Survey, which will give estimates of the undercount by demographic group and geography. The first results from this survey are expected in November 2021.

Sound Bites

1. Quality Assessments for the 2020 Census

Attribute to: Ron Jarmin

“We have numerous quality checks built into the census – both in collecting and processing the data – and have updated plans for releasing information about quality along with the first results from the census, including releasing an unprecedented number of data quality indicators.”

1. Evaluaciones de calidad para el censo de 2020

Attribute to: Angelica Menchaca

2. Demographic Analysis Provides Early Quality Metric

Attribute to: Ron Jarmin

“With today’s release of the Demographic Analysis population estimates, we are able to provide the public with its first major metric that will give us an early indication of the quality behind the 2020 population counts.”

Attribute to: Kevin Barragan-Smith

3. Coverage Patterns Across Demographic Groups

Attribute to: Eric Jensen

“Demographic Analysis is useful for showing patterns about coverage across demographic groups. We can look at these within a census or across a census. DA has historically been used to highlight coverage differentials by race and the undercount of young children aged 0 to 4.”

3. Patrones de cobertura entre grupos demográficos

Attribute to: Angelica Menchaca

4. Rigorous Methodology Behind Demographic Analysis Estimates

Attribute to: Eric Jensen

“The methodology used to create Demographic Analysis estimates is built upon decades of extensive research and collaboration both internally and with expert demographers around the nation to make it the valuable tool it is today in evaluating coverage of the national population.”

Attribute to: Kevin Barragan-Smith

5. Looking Ahead to the 2030 Census

Attribute to: Karen Battle

“We will effectively kick off a decade of analysis to assess what worked and what didn’t work, using that information to lay the foundation for the best 2030 Census possible. And by releasing these 2020 Demographic Analysis estimates for the nation by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin, we are also opening the door for researchers and the public to come to their own conclusions.”

5. Mirando hacia al censo del 2030

Attribute to: Kevin Barragan-Smith
