"Black Race Matters in the Latino Population," a strong title for an important publication co-authored by CEAL Co-chair and Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable. Did you know that ten percent of U.S. Latino adults identify as Afro-Latino or Black and Latino? This essay highlights the health research implications of the intersection of Black and Latino identities within the Latino population and calls for broader data analysis and more extensive research to understand the unique health needs of Afro-Latino individuals. Read the full publication to learn about the associations that have been found among self-identified Afro-Latino people and life expectancy, clinical events and disease incidence: https://lnkd.in/dBjmX7HA

Happy Pride Month! Raising the Pride flag signifies that LGBTQIA+ people are welcomed and celebrated at NIH, while also demonstrating our agency’s dedication to elevating these communities’ voices and perspectives in the work we do. NIH is committed to building belonging for LGBTQIA+ communities not only this month but throughout the year. We are proud of the work that is being done across the agency toward cultivating diversity in clinical trials and broader health research representative of sexual and gender diverse communities. We have also taken steps toward fostering a more supportive, respectful, and inclusive workplace for LGBTQIA+ people within the biomedical and health science research enterprise. #PrideMonth #NIH

Research shows that having one’s social needs met (e.g., food security, employment, health care access) can improve life satisfaction, but not much is known about how this influences the mental health of immigrant populations. New research examines how social needs impact mental health and life satisfaction in this population. Findings suggest opportunities to improve social needs and life satisfaction using mental health resources. https://bit.ly/3Ku8oVa #NIMHDresearch

How can research inform mental health solutions that are tailored to the unique experiences of young people in sexual and gender minority communities? During Pride Month and beyond, it is important to uplift members of sexual and gender minority communities, especially when it comes to mental health and well-being. Research finds that one approach is establishing school-based Gender-Sexuality Alliances (GSAs). GSA members who were more involved in these clubs over a school year were less likely to show signs of depression or anxiety and more likely to: ➡️Feel greater acceptance from peers. ➡️Have increased hope. ➡️Encourage social justice.
