E-commerce and China: Strategies for fighting online counterfeits, Part 1

E-Commerce and China

E-commerce now accounts for nearly 14% of all retail sales and continues to grow at a healthy rate. But U.S. businesses engaged in e-commerce, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), face a number of challenges in protecting their intellectual property (IP) on e-commerce platforms.

This program offered attendees the opportunity to learn proven strategies for protecting and enforcing their IP rights when selling on e-commerce platforms. It was Part 1 of a two-part series focused on IP issues related to selling in China and combating the sale of Chinese counterfeits on e-commerce platforms.

The program featured presentations by senior United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) IP attorneys with extensive China IP experience, representatives from such e-commerce platforms as Amazon and Alibaba, and a seasoned practitioner who has worked with clients encountering IP issues on e-commerce platforms.

Topics covered included:

  • IP and e-commerce platforms
  • brand strategies
  • challenges of the Chinese market
  • dealing with counterfeit goods

Part 2 of the series, held on December 2, 2021, focuses on offline enforcement strategies when doing business with or in China.
