Energy efficiency upgrades for off-gas homes in Cumbria
You can apply for this grant scheme if you are a low-income household with an off-gas grid and a low energy performance rating home. The grant offers measures such as insulation and heating system upgrades which would improve your home’s thermal comfort and energy efficiency, reduce your energy use and carbon emissions, and secure your energy future.
To qualify, you must meet these criteria:
- your household must have an annual income of £36,000 or less (before tax)
- your home must not use mains gas for heating purposes
- your home must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of band D or below
- your home must be owned and occupied by you, or privately rented by you

More about the grant scheme
The scheme is running from April 2023 until April 2025.
The scheme is funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) at no cost to the resident. For owner-occupiers the full cost of the improvements is covered by DESNZ, and for private tenants the majority is covered by DESNZ with a landlord contribution.
A selection of homes are “pre-qualified” based on the Index of Multiple Deprivation scores for their neighbourhood, these homes do not require income verification. We are writing to all pre-qualified households in Cumberland.
Energy efficiency upgrades include measures such as loft, wall and floor insulation, solar panels, draughtproofing, and first-time double-glazing.
Low-carbon heating upgrades include measures such as heat pumps, high retention storage heaters and wet central heating which can help secure your energy future as fossil fuels (such as oil and coal) are phased out.
Information for landlords
What you need to know about the scheme as a landlord:
- to be eligible for the scheme you must have no more than four properties in your property portfolio. (Please note for registered charities this property limit does not apply.)
- your tenant must have lived in the property for a minimum of six months
- as a landlord you must agree to pay a £500 deposit, which is refundable upon completion of installations
- DESNZ will cover two thirds of the cost of installations, and the landlord must pay for the other one third
