A severe thunderstorm accompanied by hail ripped through capital Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday afternoon, June 14, 2020, killing one person and causing damaging floods.

The storm lasted for several hours, resulting in damages around the capital, including Nyugati square, Móricz Zsigmond circle, Árkád shopping center, and IKEA near Örs Vezér square. Overhead lines and railway equipment were also damaged.

Numerous trees were downed, hitting cars and causing traffic problems. Several basements and underpasses were flooded.

The police confirmed one fatality identified as a 66-year-old woman, who lost her life in a flash flood in Tótvázsony, Veszprém county. 

The victim, accompanied by her husband, wanted to clean the bridge pillar in their garden from the sediments caused by rains and flooding, but she slipped in the water and was washed away by flash floods for about 70 m (230 feet).

The disaster emergency crew was able to pull the victim out of the water but was unable to resuscitate her.

According to The Weather Channel, thunderstorms are expected to continue in the capital into Thursday, June 18.
