Check out what’s coming up next in our Zoom Cast Series 2020: Focus on Serious Mental Illness!

"Reclassifying Schizophrenia as a Brain Disorder” is scheduled to air October 2, 2020 @ 1pm CT/ 2pm ET.

In a letter to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Schizophrenia And Related Disorders Alliance of America (SARDAA) proposed that “the inclusion of schizophrenia in the National Neurological Conditions Surveillance System (NNCSS) could be an important first step towards understanding schizophrenia better, reducing stigma in the illness, and re-invigorating our orientation towards timely and appropriate treatment as well as making incarceration and homelessness unacceptable outcomes for schizophrenia.”

Join us for an interactive discussion with:

Laura Pogliano, Founder and Executive Director of Parents For Care, a 501(c)3. Laura is a training and education consultant in Baltimore, MD. She was the primary caretaker of her son, Zaccaria, who was stricken with schizophrenia at age 17. She is a tireless advocate for those with the most serious brain illnesses and the SARDAA Maryland State Chapter Leader.

Bethany Yeiser, - Motivational speaker and the author of Mind Estranged: My Journey from Schizophrenia and Homelessness to Recovery (released May 31, 2014). Bethany was a scholarship winner, researcher and violinist before she became severely mentally ill and homeless in 2003 during her senior year of college. Bethany established the CURESZ Foundation with Dr. Henry Nasrallah in July, 2016. CURESZ stands for Comprehensive Understanding via Research and Education into SchiZophrenia. Bethany also maintains a blog called "Recovery Road" on PsychologyToday.com.

Both of our special guests are members of SARDAA and have been instrumental in advancing efforts to educate on serious mental illnesses as brain diseases.

Program Description:

For too long, schizophrenia and related conditions/illnesses have not received the attention and research needed to make the next big breakthrough, be it a cure or more effective treatment than what is currently available.

There are those who believe reclassifying schizophrenia as a physical illness, a neurological disorder, or illness of the brain would be a path toward better outcomes for those who suffer, and the loved ones who take care of them.

There are also those who believe reclassifying schizophrenia would not result in better outcomes, and that we should be focusing our advocacy, time, and energy on fair treatment rather than reclassification.

Co-hosts: Janet Hays and Eric Smith will lead what we expect will be a lively interactive conversation on "Reclassifying Schizophrenia as a Brain Disorder".
