About us
The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) is the official government body responsible for intellectual property (IP) rights in the United Kingdom. These rights include: Patents Designs Trade marks Copyright We are an Executive Agency of the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT). As part of DSIT, we are responsible for the role of IP rights in supporting innovation. Under DSIT, the IPO is directed and controlled by corporate governance rules to ensure that it supplies public services of the highest quality, shares good ideas, controls costs and above all delivers what it promises under its corporate priorities. To ensure that it acts within these rules, ministers appoint independent members to sit on a Steering Board. This Steering Board has no executive functions; its role is to advise ministers, through our Director General, on the strategies that the IPO must adopt. The Steering Board has established an Audit Committee to assist and advise it on risk, control, governance and associated issues. The Committee acts in a non-executive capacity.

Congratulations to our IPO Counter-Infringement Campaigns Team on their well-deserved #PRMoments gold award for their 'Fake Always Breaks' campaign! Proud of their work warning the public of the dangers that counterfeit vehicle parts pose to motorists and other road users!
We were absolutely thrilled to win the PRmoment gold award for ‘Best Use of Planning, Strategy and Evaluation’ for our ‘Fake Always Breaks’ campaign last night. The campaign aimed to raise awareness among consumers about the dangers of counterfeit vehicle parts and educate those in the motor trade on how to spot and report fakes. In collaboration with a network of fantastic partners, we created bespoke guidance for consumers and businesses and utilised paid social and earned media to achieve our goals. Ultimately, this work resulted in: ✔️ Over 200 pieces of news coverage (including 2 national broadcast pieces) ✔️ Over 900,000 social media engagements (likes, clicks, and comments) ✔️ 79% of surveyed consumers reporting that they were deterred from buying fake car parts The #PRMoments awards celebrate excellence and recognise outstanding campaigns and exceptional talent in the UK PR and Communications sector.
