Questions to the Commission regarding Amazon’s infringement of fundamental rights such as the right to freedom from victimisation on trade union grounds

Question for written answer  E-006840/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Nikolaj Villumsen (GUE/NGL)

In an open letter to the Commission, 36 European trade union leaders have called on it to investigate Amazon’s surveillance of employees and trade unions. According to the trade union leaders, there is a well-founded suspicion that Amazon’s actions in the labour market are in violation of European labour, data and privacy laws. Moreover, the letter also indicates that Amazon reportedly monitors its employees on social media. This is contrary to applicable EU rules and must have consequences.

The EU often takes the initiative where there are threats to internal market rules. We should do the same if workers’ rights in respect of freedom from victimisation on trade union grounds are threatened.

Can the Commission explain how it will respond to the communication from the international trade union federation, UNI Global, and whether it would consider bringing an action against Amazon for violation of fundamental rights?
