Chronic wasting disease in Oregon: What hunters should know

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) of Deer, Elk and Moose

CWD is a fatal neurologic disease that has been detected in free-ranging and captive deer, elk, and moose in numerous states and Canadian provinces. While CWD has not yet been detected in Oregon, it has been found in three bordering states – Idaho, California, and Washington.

What are the symptoms of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)

Animals infected with CWD gradually lose body condition (fat and muscle mass), becoming emaciated. They may behave abnormally, displaying a wide stance, staggering gait, or inability to keep their head up with excessive salivation and thirst. Once your sample is received and submitted to the lab, your result will show as “pending” until the testing is complete. Test results can typically be expected within 3 to 5 weeks. Check back weekly for updated results.

Definitions

Pending: Means that a tissue sample has been received and submitted to the lab for testing, but the results are not yet available

Not detected: Means that the prions that are associated with CWD were not detected in the tissue tested

Inconclusive: Means that the test was inconclusive because the exact location of the tissue that is most desired for testing was not located by the laboratory personnel

Detected: Means that the prions that are associated with CWD have been detected in the tissue tested and the deer/elk is positive for CWD
