Our mission is to help people take action to prevent suicide in their communities.
About us
Forefront Suicide Prevention is a Center of Excellence at the University of Washington. Our mission is to help people take action to prevent suicide in their communities. Suicide is among the most pressing public health issues of our time. A recent Scientific American editorial called the U.S. suicide rate “nothing short of an epidemic” with a life being lost every 11.7 minutes. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth, and 59 percent of all firearm fatalities are suicides. At Forefront, we are changing the conversation about mental health and suicide to one of prevention and compassion. We are translating research into policy and broad-based systems change. We are building capacity for suicide prevention through training, protocol development, and consultation to health care organizations, schools and institutions of higher education. We believe that innovation, research and partnerships are critical to saving lives. Since 2012, our work has focused on Washington state, but the laws and services we have helped shape through advocacy and outreach are serving as a model for the rest of the nation. Today, we are building an inclusive, powerful, grassroots movement to bring suicide prevention to the forefront of our legislative agendas, school curricula and public awareness. Please join us. Your passion and compassion can save lives. Learn more about us online at intheforefront.org. Connect with us on Facebook: facebook.com/intheforefront and Twitter: twitter.com/intheforefront

Safely returning unused medications is a simple way to prevent accidental overdoses and suicides. Please fill out this quick survey to help the Washington State Department of Health determine how to improve the safe medication return network in Washington. 💊
Take the survey here: https://lnkd.in/dmYN4myp Washington's Safe Medication Return system reduces overdoses, poisonings, and suicide attempts. We are currently running a survey to understand how people use this system. By taking part in this survey, you can help us improve Safe Medication Return. Your responses help us identify barriers to accessing our services and will be used to make the system even more user-friendly in the future.

We’ve been working with University of Washington Athletics for the last year, to ensure all coaches and athletics staff are trained in Forefront Suicide Prevention LEARN®, our gatekeeper training which teaches participants how to help someone who might be at risk of suicide connect with professional support. Dr Kelly Schloredt, Director of Psychological Services for UW Athletics has been leading the effort to train all of UWs 600+ NCAA student athletes and their coaching and other support staff on LEARN® skills. We consider this work to be incredibly important because suicides among college athletes have more than doubled in the last 20 years, according to a new paper published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) by lead author, Bridget Whelan, MPH (@UW Department of Family Medicine). Amy K. Paulson, MSW, LMHCA, Forefront Trainer, who leads our partnership with UW Athletics, says “We already knew that student athletes are often under tremendous pressure and stress, and the new paper led by Bridget Whelan of UW Family Medicine confirms this. This makes us even more grateful for our partnership with UW Athletics, because we know that our LEARN training can help people learn how to prevent suicide in their communities. Bravo to UW for continuing to care so much about their athletes’ wellbeing!” https://lnkd.in/djQrJKWb

📊 Analysis of this year's Forefront in the Schools post-training survey data was presented by UW Nursing Science student Amanda Hapenny, RN, MSN, PHMNP-BC, PhD at the Western Institute Of Nursing Conference. Amanda's presentation was called "Enhancing Suicide Prevention Training: Student Perspectives" and focused on the question asking students what suggestions they have for improving the training. Great work Amanda! 💜
