Suicide rates among college athletes doubled between 2002 and 2022, per University of Washington (UW) researchers Bridget Whelan MPH and Kelly Schloredt PhD, ABPP, in 2024. Although rates of depression, anxiety and suicide have risen among all students, student athletes face unique challenges due to pressures from both school and sport. In response to these findings, UW Athletics and Forefront Suicide Prevention have partnered to develop a customized suicide prevention program for UW student athletes. Join us for this webinar in the Forefront speaker series to learn more about the specific suicide risk factors that affect collegiate athletes, and to hear from Dr. Schloredt, and Bridget M. Whelan, as they discuss their 20-year analysis of the issue and what is being done to bring attention to collegiate athlete mental health. https://lnkd.in/g4hXaGYc

Our mission is to help people take action to prevent suicide in their communities.
About us
Forefront Suicide Prevention is a Center of Excellence at the University of Washington. Our mission is to help people take action to prevent suicide in their communities. Suicide is among the most pressing public health issues of our time. A recent Scientific American editorial called the U.S. suicide rate “nothing short of an epidemic” with a life being lost every 11.7 minutes. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth, and 59 percent of all firearm fatalities are suicides. At Forefront, we are changing the conversation about mental health and suicide to one of prevention and compassion. We are translating research into policy and broad-based systems change. We are building capacity for suicide prevention through training, protocol development, and consultation to health care organizations, schools and institutions of higher education. We believe that innovation, research and partnerships are critical to saving lives. Since 2012, our work has focused on Washington state, but the laws and services we have helped shape through advocacy and outreach are serving as a model for the rest of the nation. Today, we are building an inclusive, powerful, grassroots movement to bring suicide prevention to the forefront of our legislative agendas, school curricula and public awareness. Please join us. Your passion and compassion can save lives. Learn more about us online at intheforefront.org. Connect with us on Facebook: facebook.com/intheforefront and Twitter: twitter.com/intheforefront

For several years, we've been working with Jody Early, PhD, MS, MCHES® at the University of Washington School of Nursing. Every year, Jody's students put together marketing and communications materials about suicide prevention and Forefront comes in to offer advice on best practices. This year's projects were so impressive that we wanted to share. Huge 👏 for Jody helping to prepare a strong new crop of health communicators.
