Training to help cultural organisations reduce their carbon footprint in response to the climate emergency.

This is a three part programme:

Tuesday 23 May - Online learning introduction to be completed independently

Tuesday 6 June, 10am to 12.30pm - via Zoom

Thursday 8 June, 9:15am to 1:15pm - via Zoom

About the programme:

The Carbon Literacy Course will give you:

• an understanding of what climate change is

• the scale of its effects

• how cultural organisations fit into the global, national and local picture.

Become certified as Carbon Literate

You will complete your training by making an individual pledge, and an organisational pledge, of what you can do to make a significant difference to your carbon impact.

To become certified, you must complete all 3 modules of the course and submit your individual and organisational pledges.

Who should attend?

Where possible, two people from your organisation attend the course for peer support when developing actions.

What will you learn?

Session 1: Pre-recorded: The basic science of climate change Duration 1 hour 30 minutes to be completed between 23 May and 5 June 2023.

• Watch a documentary presenting the science and facts about climate change.

• Post-session activity: identify an object which you can relate to climate change to talk about in the first live online session.

Session 2: Training via zoom, taking place at 10am to 12.30pm on 6 June 2023 (includes short break).

• Consider the role of cultural organisations in tackling the climate crisis and green recovery.

• Reflect on the questions posed in session 1

• Post-session activity: calculate your carbon footprint (WWF calculator)

Session 3: Live online training via zoom, taking place on 8 June 2023. This session will be delivered in two parts, with part one from 9:15am to 11.00am and part two from 11:30am to 1:15pm (includes short breaks).

• Carbon budgets, UK and International policy positions, and carbon footprints.

• Action planning and how we talk about climate change with others.

• Post/end of session activity: complete your Carbon Literacy participant form

Session Leaders:

Jenni Orme is the Museum Development Officer for Gloucestershire.

Helena Jaeschke is an accredited conservator and the Conservation Development Officer for South West Museum Development .

Roz Bonnet is the Programme Officer for South West Museum Development .

All three are certified Carbon Literate by the Carbon Literacy Project.

This training session is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

How will this session be delivered and what equipment do I need?

This session will be delivered online using Zoom a cloud based video conferencing service. The service is free to use, all you need is either a laptop, tablet/ iPad or phone. Your device will need to be able to stream video and sound. If you are using a laptop you can simply connect via your web browser. If using a tablet/ iPad or phone you will need to download the app (free to download) to connect to the session. Full instructions on how to join the session will be issued direct to the email address provided at the point of booking before the session takes place.
