DEC Announces Annual Tree and Shrub Seedling Sale

More Than 50 Species Available from Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced that the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery has kicked off its annual spring seedling sale. Each year, this DEC nursery offers dozens of New York-grown tree and shrub species for sale to the public.

"For more than 100 years, DEC's tree nursery in Saratoga has helped reforest New York by providing seedlings for conservation plantings across the state," Commissioner Seggos said. "The annual spring sale is a chance for the public to take part in this tradition by obtaining strong, winter-hardy trees and shrubs for their properties."

The nursery sale offers a low-cost opportunity for landowners to implement large-scale conservation plantings on their property. From homeowners hoping to create a windbreak, to those looking to cool their home with shade in the summer, the dozens of species available from the nursery offer something for every landowner's planting goal.

In addition to benefitting residential properties, planting trees also positively impacts the surrounding environment. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making them a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. They also provide food and shelter for native wildlife, improve water quality by filtering runoff, prevent erosion, and so much more.

This year's nursery sale runs until May 15, 2020. For more information including how to order, visit the Spring Seedling Sale webpage on DEC's website. Some species sell out early, so it is recommended to place orders by phone for the most up-to-date availability information.

Free School Seedling Program Now Accepting Applications

Schools and school-sponsored programs across New York State are eligible to receive 50 free tree seedlings, or a mixed shrub packet for spring planting through the nursery's School Seedling Program. The seedlings offer teachers a hands-on resource to enhance lessons and can be planted on school grounds or other community spaces.

Applications can be submitted online through the DEC website. A paper application is available for download on the DEC website, or via mail by contacting the nursery at (518) 581-1439. Applications must be received by March 31, 2020.
