Under a plan by Oregon governor Kate Brown most prisoners, nearly 75%, who committed crimes as juveniles will be eligible for early parole or have their sentence commuted. This could involve releasing nearly 250 violent and repeat criminals (murderers, rapists, sodomy) out early. About 74 have been commuted already.

Governor Brown wishes to move away from prisons as punishments while saving government costs.

Former Multnomah County Chief Deputy District Attorney Norm Frink told KOIN-TV, “This is spitting in the face of law enforcement and crime victims — not even consulting them before taking this action. It’s also flying in the face of of the procedural requirements of Oregon law, so it’s a lawless act in addition to that.”

One person who may be released is Andrew Johnson who was sentenced to life in prison for stabbing a woman to death. The victim’s family said of the murderer being released “This isn’t ‘I hijacked a car, I shop lifted.’ This is someone who brutally murdered somebody and has bragged about doing it prior at a young age. He’s a sociopath – he’s not rehabilitated.”

KTVZ reports that four of the five notorious “Redmodn Five” killers may be eligible for early release. They reported that “The juveniles trashed the 52-year-old woman’s home while she was at work and considered various methods of killing her, such as injecting her with bleach or electrocuting her in the bathtub. They ended up beating her over the head with champagne bottles before Koch shot her in the head with a rifle.” The teens went on to steal the victims car and headed to Canada to flee the crime scene, but were caught.
