NJDEP is a leader in the country for its pollution prevention efforts & innovative environmental management strategies.
About us
On America's first official "Earth Day" — April 22, 1970, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection was born. New Jersey became the third state in the country to consolidate its past programs into a unified major agency to administer aggressive environmental protection and conservation efforts. Former Governor William T. Cahill appointed Richard J. Sullivan as the first commissioner. Since that day, NJDEP began a role to manage natural resources and solve pollution problems. In what started with about 1,400 employees in five divisions, NJDEP now has a staff of approximately 2,900 and is a leader in the country for its pollution prevention efforts and innovative environmental management strategies.

As Women’s History Month draws to a close, DEP colleagues gathered on March 20 in the DEP headquarters’ Public Hearing Room, where HERstory was told by five outstanding New Jersey women. 🎉Their HERstories, centered around the theme of Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, were part of DEP’s celebration of Women’s History Month. 🎤DEP Assistant Commissioner Elizabeth Dragon, of the Community Investment and Economic Revitalization (CIER) program moderated the panel, with members Kimberly Cahall, of the DEP Office of Enforcement Policy; Natasha Hemmings, MPA, of Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey; Jayne Johnsoné Johnson, of the Governor’s Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging; Patricia Matos, of the Princeton Area Community Foundation; and Abbie Tang-Smith, of CIER. 💡The women spoke about their career paths, barriers they encountered, allies they made along the way and support they found. Each also told of the people who inspire them – when they started out and who continue to encourage them every day. The event was organized for the DEP community by the CREW (Club for Resources and Empowerment of Women) employee resource group and the DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) team. #WomensHistoryMonth
