The United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM) is a networked global media agency leading a mission to inform, engage and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy. This paid internship gives you meaningful work experience and a unique opportunity to chart your career path with skills, networking and mentorship. Available to both undergraduate and graduate students, USAGM Fellows will receive first-hand experience in the Federal Government’s global media programs. The flexible program provides opportunity for in-person work at USAGM headquarters in Washington, DC, along with remote and hybrid working opportunities, all offering valuable professional experience that compliments education in fields related to the U.S. Agency for Global Media's mission.
Each Fellow will work under the guidance of a USAGM manager, developing and delivering work that is experienced by millions of people around the world. Open to individuals from diverse backgrounds, geographies and lived experience, this is an opportunity to gain contacts, skills and career insights which are invaluable in preparing individuals for future employment, all while matching their course of study and field of interest and delivering meaningful work.
USAGM Fellows may perform broadcasting functions with duties that may include the following:
- Research and production of daily audio/video programming
- Composition of special reports
- Research for stories or profiles, news events, features and special topics
- Camera work
- Interviews
- Logging
- Transcription
- Organizing footage
- Collection of b-roll
- Writing
- Editing audio/video, mobile and social media
USAGM Fellows may also perform duties supporting the Mission Support Offices such as Administration, Contracts, Public Affairs & Relations, Human Resources, Graphics and Research which may include:
- Research
- Writing/Policy
- Graphics
- Analyzing Data
- Preparing Reports
- Data Cleansing
Fellowships may be in-person or virtual depending on the programming office mission/needs. Fellows will engage in work as directed by supervisors and program guidelines.

Eligibility
To be eligible to participate you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a U.S. Citizen; or have lived in the U.S. for three (3) consecutive years
- Currently enrolled in a degree-granting program as an undergraduate or graduate student at a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) such as a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) or Tribal College and University (TCU)
- Have completed at least one (1) full year (freshman year or equivalent) college or university coursework at an institution described above before the internship begins
- Have a minimum post-secondary GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Be able to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the duration of the internship
- Have a confirmed interest in working with USAGM
Program Components
During this full-time 10-week Summer and 15-week Fall program, you will intern five days per week. Assignments may be in-person, fully virtual or hybrid, depending on the office in which you are placed.
Various professional development sessions will be available to enhance fellows’ knowledge and marketability. The Washington Center (TWC) organizes hands-on experiences to prepare you for career growth including resume review & cover letter writing, LinkedIn review and interviewing & pitching yourself. TWC also organizes networking opportunities during and has highly active alumni networks of which you will be a part.
Program Benefits
This is a fully funded program sponsored by USAGM. Sponsorship covers the cost of the program, housing (if needed) and roundtrip travel to and from the internship site city. You will be responsible for daily expenses (such as meals), however, USAGM may cover the cost of commuting expenses. A stipend of $2,550 to $5,550 (depending on housing needs) will be provided to help alleviate these expenses.
Housing and Living
Fully furnished housing is provided by TWC for all participants who need it. Housing is arranged near the internship site. Housing accommodations can, and typically do, require shared-living arrangements with other interns. Every effort is made to arrange housing near essential amenities like grocery stores, public transit and medical facilities.
Academic Credit
You may be eligible to receive academic credit for your participation in this program. However, credits are determined and awarded by each university. You are responsible for arranging any academic credit through your college or university. You should discuss arrangements with your institution, prior to starting the program and let TWC know the specific requirements of your university.

Decision Notification: Mid July 2023 (Applicants are notified when they are selected for interviews until all positions are filled or until mid July)

- Resume: Upload a maximum 2-page resume that outlines your education background, work experience, activities and honors or recognitions.
- Statement of Interest: In a maximum 300-word statement, please address your specific interest in interning with the U.S. Agency for Global Media, along with what skills and experiences you have that make you a unique candidate. Rather than repeating your resume, you should describe why you want to intern at the USAGM, what skills and knowledge you have that has prepared you for this opportunity and what you hope to gain from this experience.
