MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tennessee children in foster care may now settle into their forever home in less time.

Gov. Bill Lee signed this week the Forever Homes Act, which will not only impact kids across Tennessee but also in Shelby County.

1,200 flags stood in front of Christ Church in East Memphis. These flags symbolize the number of kids in foster care in Shelby County, and the enormous need for foster homes.

“The need is critical for more foster families. For people to come along the foster families for support,” said Laura Greenwell, of Christ Church.

Inhibit of the 1,200 kids in foster care in Shelby County, Greenwell said they’re displaying these flags.

“We want it to be a visual reminder and awareness for people driving down Poplar," said Greenwell.

The goal of the Forever Homes Act is to provide support to foster and adoptive families and help accelerate the child placement process.

A challenging process Greenwell experienced first-hand.

"I have a daughter who was adopted out of foster care. She is 23 now. We got her when she was six months old and 23 years ago, it took us 4-1/2 years from the time she was placed with us and time we finalized her adoption,” said Greenwell.

The legislation will allow for a judicial waiver to shorten the adoption finalization process from six, to three months if a court deems it appropriate.
