This will still allow you to feel part of group learning and will still be led by our highly experienced facilitators. Know Me to Teach Me – 1 Day Course with Louise Bombèr – Limited Places Available! 

Differentiated Discipline for children and young people who have experienced adverse childhood experiences

Now is the time to update our practice in schools in line with the latest neuroscience.

We will explore the differences between traditional behavioural responses and a differentiated response.

The day will have a theoretical underpinning but there will also be opportunities to explore, experiment and make it all practical.
If you want to be challenged and if you want the theory to be made practical this is your day!

The day will also be interactive. Come with an open mind and leave inspired to ensure inclusion is integrated into all aspects of your school community and life. It is not enough to simply differentiate curriculum. We must differentiate emotional and social tasks/ expectations, including discipline.

Louise Michelle Bombèr is qualified as both a specialist teacher, a therapist and a DDP certified practitioner.

She is the Founding Director of TouchBase Centre CiC in Brighton.

The aims of TouchBase are to support those who have experienced adverse childhood experiences to function well at home, in their schools and out in community.

Louise and her team offer a range of support services for children and young adults (5 to 25) who have experienced significant relational traumas and losses to move towards learned security and recovery. They also support family, friends and professionals around these children.

Due to the continued success of the PACE+ course over the last 4 years, we are thrilled to offer another FREE opportunity for all staff from your school to attend a series of  six online webinar sessions, commencing in January 2025.

In these sessions, staff will learn practical, evidence-based strategies to help them work successfully with children and young people with SEMH needs, as well as strategies for everyone’s wellbeing.

The use of the PACE Approach (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy) overtime by key adults with a child or young person who has experienced relational trauma helps:

  • To overcome blocked trust – developing a relationship in which the child or young person allows the adult to have some influence on him/her rather than trying control the adult.
  • The child or young person to become open and engaged to learning (by helping him/her to feel safe) rather than being stuck in a hyper-vigilant state of fight and flight or freeze.
  • The child or young person to build resilience and learn social and emotional skills for success at school and beyond.

 Over the six sessions we will cover

  • The four cornerstones of a trauma informed approach
  • The transformative power of feeling safe – The Polyvagal Theory
  • From mistrust to trust – The PACE Approach (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy)

NPQs and Additional CPD from South Central Teaching School Hub

South Central Teaching School Hub has been designated by the Department for Education (DfE) to be the Teaching School Hub for schools across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

We offer high-quality evidence-based professional development for your staff  and many of our CPD opportunities are fully funded therefore are free for staff from BCP and Dorset schools.

 

 National Professional Qualifications (NPQs)

South Central Teaching School Hub are proud to offer the full range NPQ courses to schools in BCP and Dorset in partnership with University College London Institute of Education (UCL IOE).

Latest Update from the DfE : March 2024

The DfE have announced that the following NPQ courses, starting in Autumn 2024, will be FULLY  FUNDED  for staff in STATE FUNDED SCHOOLS AND SETTINGS

  • NPQ for Special Needs Co-Ordinators (NPQSENCO) – New
  • NPQ Headship (NPQH)
  • NPQ Leading Primary Mathematics (NPQLM)

The DfE have not yet announced if funding will be available for NPQ courses that commence in Spring 2025, so if you were interested in the above courses, NOW would be the time to apply for your place and receive the funding on offer.

Funding for other NPQs

For all the other NPQs commencing in Autumn 2024,

  • Funding to cover the full NPQ course cost will be available to teachers and leaders from the 50% of schools with the highest proportion of students who attract pupil premium funding.
  • 16-19 educational settings identified as having high disadvantage
  • For the NPQEYL, highly disadvantaged early years settings will also be eligible

NPQs courses available for Autumn 2024

South Central TSH provides NPQs to BCP and Dorset schools in partnership with University College London Institute of Education (UCL IOE)

  • NPQ Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL) for leaders who are or aspiring to be managers of Private, Voluntary and Independent nurseries, Headteachers of school-based or maintained nurseries, or childminders with leadership responsibilities.
  • NPQ Executive Leadership (NPQEL) for those who are, or are aspiring to be, and executive headteacher or have a school trust CEO role with responsibility for leading several schools.
  • NPQ Headship (NPQH) those who are, or are aspiring to be, a Headteacher or Head of School with responsibility for leading a school. Additional support offer for the NPQ in Headship In addition to the reformed suite of NPQs, the department is introducing an additional support offer for new headteachers from autumn 2021. This is a targeted support package for teachers new to the role of headship.
  • NPQ Leading Literacy (NPQLL) for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading literacy across a school, year group, key stage or phase.
  • NPQ Leading Teaching (NPQLT) for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading teaching in a subject, year group, key stage or phase.
  • NPQ Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD) for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading the development of other teachers in their school. This may be responsibility for the development of all teachers across a school or specifically trainees or ECTs.
  • NPQ for Special Needs Co-ordinators (NPQSENCO) –  NEW  for Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs), teachers interested in developing expertise in special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) or undertaking a SENCO role in future and school leaders.

How to Apply for a NPQ

Currently the DfE registration portal is NOT OPEN for Autumn 2024 registrations until July. HOWEVER, you can pre-register your interest for your preferred NPQ.

  • Pre-register with UCL for your preferred NPQ by completing a short form
  • Please ensure you select South Central TSH as the Delivery Partner on this form
  • Once the DfE registration portal re-opens, UCL will contact you with a link to the DfE registration portal to complete your registration. It’s that simple!

NPQ Framework

All NPQs are underpinned by a new content framework, setting out what participants should know and be able to do after completing an NPQ. You can access the content frameworks NPQs at National professional qualification frameworks.

Other CPD Opportunities

The Regional Education Partnership Board for Dorset and BCP has identified the following priorities for CPD for the next academic year:

  • Trauma-Informed Approaches for Everyone’s Wellbeing

  • Improving Progress and Attainment in Maths
  • Leadership (the CPD for leadership is covered by the NPQs.)

We (South Central Teaching School Hub) will, therefore, offer this range of CPD to staff from BCP and Dorset schools in the next academic year. and will be delivered by us or by signposting you to CPD from our wider strategic partners.

We are describing these as ‘additional CPD’ as they are additional to the DfE Golden Thread of Initial Teacher Training, Early Career Framework and National Professional Qualifications.

Leading Oracy Development   led by Dr Laura Kerslake and Dr Jim Rogers

Dr Laura Kerslake has a PhD from the University of Cambridge where she carried out research into oracy and dialogic education. She currently works on a research project at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge, investigating dialogic education in STEM subjects and she is an associate of Oracy Cambridge.

Dr Jim Rogers has worked in education for 26 years as a teacher, school leader, academic, ITT lead and director of professional learning for a large multi-academy trust. Jim has led two teaching schools and worked on behalf of the Teaching School Council to support school improvement in the southwest.

Course Details

Developing oracy (the capacity to use spoken language) is pivotal to driving outstanding progress and attainment across the curriculum. The Ofsted Inspection Framework recognises the importance of using talk to accelerate and deepen learning in all subjects. We know from research that supporting children to develop their oracy is one of the most significant ways in which we can impact on learning and, in  particular, close the disadvantage gap.  As Marc Rowland reminds us “The language gap is the attainment gap.”

The course will equip teachers and leaders with:

  • Knowledge, skills and practical strategies to effectively develop children’s language through planning,  teaching, modelling and assessment.
  • Strategies on implementation of high-quality, sustainable professional development and to develop collaborative professional learning networks to ensure sustainability.

This series of three webinars,  delivered by HISP Research Hub, will explore and highlight the best bets for teachers regarding support for disadvantaged pupils.

Centred around the Education Endowment Foundation’s (EEF’s) tiered model, we will unpick the evidence around high-quality teaching, focusing on the EEF’s 5-a day principle – five key practices that all teachers can easily embed to ensure their learning is as impactful as possible.

We will also look at targeted academic support and wider strategies to help close the disadvantaged gap.

This course is suitable for teachers from both primary, secondary and special/AP schools.
