SEATTLE — More than 250,000 people moved out of Washington state between 2021 and 2022 according to recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Washington had both a higher immigration rate and outimigration rate than the national average for the same period of time. Some of the largest state-to-state migration flows in 2022 involved people moving to and from highly populated states, according to the Census Bureau.

Most of the Washingtonians who moved out of state in 2022 headed for The Golden State, but Idaho and Oregon both got a fair number of movers as well:

  • California: 31,866
  • Oregon: 25,457
  • Arizona: 21,242
  • Texas: 21,083
  • Idaho: 14,387

The other large state-to-state migration flow that the U.S. Census Bureau identified nationwide was people moving from highly populated states to neighboring states that were less populous.

Data also reflects that more than 248,000 people moved to the Evergreen state last year. Here are the states where the highest number of people moved from:

  • California: 49,968
  • Oregon: 36,061
  • Texas: 19,245
  • Idaho: 10,577
  • Florida: 8,368

Washington's overall outmigration number is lower than it was in 2021 when over 269,000 people are believed to have moved out of state. The most common destinations were once again California, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona and Texas. Fewer people moved to Washington state in 2021 than in 2022, with more than 225,000 people making the trip. California, Oregon, Arizona, Texas and Idaho were the most common states for people to move from.
