Flash flooding inundates more provinces

More flash floods in the eastern province of Trat and Udon Thani in the Northeast have brought misery to more than 100 households, as torrential rain continued to fall across several parts of the country yesterday.

Flash floods struck four villages in tambon Pranit of Trat's Khao Saming district early yesterday, a source said.

The local tambon administration organisation and Sawang Bun Chuay Luea Tham disaster rescue foundation were forced to go out in pontoon boats to the flooded communities to help victims, the source said.

Priya Rungruang, a flood victim, said floodwaters rose and submerged her home early yesterday following several hours of torrential rain.

Her family tried to save as many belongings as possible but many were damaged because the floodwaters rose very rapidly, she said.

Ban Don Sung village chief, Somnuek Khrengpan, said the village is in a low-lying area of the tambon meaning floodwater does not drain quickly, adding many feared fresh rain might trigger more flooding.

In Udon Thani, deputy provincial governor, Thawatchai Sithong, said he had received reports of serious flooding in four villages in tambon Na Khae of Na Yoong district.

As of yesterday floodwaters were continuing to rise in these villages after first being inundated the previous night, said Mr Thawatchai.

Provincial authorities were trying to find out how many households were affected, he said.

Chayaphon Thitisak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said the latest round of heavy rain was the result of a monsoon trough in the upper part of the country passing a low-pressure system in the South China Sea coupled with the influence of a southwest monsoon in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand.

Heavy rain has affected many parts of the country since Aug 6, he said.

However, the situation in Phayao, Nan, Loei, Prachin Buri and Chanthaburi where severe flooding was reported earlier has improved significantly, he said.
