Deflection Study: International Journal of Drug Policy
Engagement in drug treatment following nonfatal overdose among people who inject drugs in Appalachia
Immediately after experiencing a non-fatal overdose, many people who inject drugs (PWID) engage in harm-minimizing behavior change, including engagement in drug treatment. To inform the implementation of tailored interventions designed to facilitate drug treatment engagement in rural communities, the authors sought to identify correlates of starting any form of drug treatment after their most recent overdose among PWID who reside in the rural county of Cabell County (Huntington) West Virginia.

The results of the study found that one-third of individuals in the study started any form of drug treatment in the 30 days following their most recent overdose. Factors associated with engaging in drug treatment included: recent buprenorphine or Suboxone injection, someone calling 911 after their most recent overdose, and older age. Results suggest that contact with emergency personnel after an overdose may represent an important opportunity to link PWID to drug treatment. The implementation of response teams trained in linking PWID to the services they require and helping persons navigate treatment systems may be a valuable intervention to reduce the harms of the opioid overdose crisis. Cabell County, West Virginia is a COSSAP first responder diversion site. The First Responder Diversion and Referral Mentoring Initiative provides communities interested in starting diversion and/or referral programs the opportunity to learn from established or innovative programs that have shown success in meeting the treatment needs of individuals with a substance use disorder. Study: Substance Use and Addiction
Extended-Release Buprenorphine Preferred by Patients: Study
A new study finds patients taking the opioid use disorder treatment buprenorphine prefer the extended-release (ER) version over the immediate-release version. The ER version is given as a weekly or monthly injection, while the immediate-release treatment is taken orally every day, according to a National Institutes of Health news release. The study found the ER injection of buprenorphine produced generally more positive patient-reported outcomes, including overall patient satisfaction, effectiveness and convenience. The researchers did not find any significant differences in illicit opioid use or side effects between the two treatment groups. Read more.

SCCPSS and Savannah Police partner to debut Handle with Care program
Student safety and well-being have always been top priorities for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, but the district is placing new emphasis on these concerns with a new partnership with the Savannah Police Department. They hope to address childhood trauma early.

“We view Handle with Care as another tool to help build positive relationships between the home, the school and the community,” said Dr. Ann Levett, Superintendent of SCCPSS.

While the school system has always worked to address trauma, this new formalized process will allow staff to step in to help sooner. When police are called to a scene or an incident and they notice a child is involved or a witness, they can use an app developed by the district to notify them about the student’s encounter with law enforcement.

Officers say the app is easy to use and it takes seconds to add the student’s name and school. The app then alerts the student’s principal and counselor to handle the student with care the next day. Officials say the school’s response can range from counseling to extra help with assignments to just keeping an eye on them, but it’s meant to mitigate the impact of the event and prevent further escalation. American Medical Association Releases Plan To Combat Racism Within U.S. Health Care
The nation’s largest doctors group Tuesday released a comprehensive plan aimed at dismantling structural racism inside its own ranks and within the U.S. medical establishment. U.S. physicians are overwhelmingly white and AMA membership tends to reflect that. The AMA plan calls for more than diversifying its staff  but aims to embed anti-racist activities and education at every level of the organization. The influential advocacy group also plans to use its clout to advocate for health equity government policies and to create and deliver anti-racist training for medical students, doctors and health systems. Risk of criminal justice system involvement among people with co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use disorder
A 2018 study published in the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry found that people with a co-occurring disorder are seven times more likely to be arrested for a crime compared to those with neither illness and 16 times more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. This study mirrors findings of many others, all of which point to the overrepresentation of people with dual diagnoses at every stage in the criminal justice system.  Read more.
