Students arrive at your program with strengths, despite missing credits.
Set a plan of study - high school diploma, GED, job skills, college prep - based upon their strengths, goals and identity.
"Growth Mindset" is a term promoted by Dr. Carol Dweck:
“In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” (Dweck, Education Week, 2015)
In working from a strengths-based starting point, focus on what the students have already accomplished through dedication and hard work, not through just talent and intelligence.
Students who have long been told that they are "smart" or "talented" and have recently failed at a course or task are more likely to give up. Students who spend time and effort on the same task - and are praised for that time and effort - are more likely to persevere and achieve.
Promote student success and reward their efforts:
- Provide multiple opportunities for earning Indicators of Academic Progress (IAPs), including high school credits, GED assessments, pre-high school level skills, job skills achievement, industry certificates, college prep, and college level coursework (Dual Credit).
- Provide recognition for effort and growth through Students of the Month, stickers and certificates.
- Be specific in your verbal and written praise - focus on what they did, how they did it, and their perseverance.
Professional Development is integral to your students' success and your confidence as an educational leader.
