On February 18, the Government of Paraguay declared a State of Health Emergency throughout the country in response to the dengue epidemic.
Through the week ending March 13, Paraguay has reported 203,922 total dengue fever cases, including 51 deaths.
This compares to 669 dengue cases reported during the same period in 2019.
The country’s climatic conditions due to rain in the summer period, inadequate waste management, and seasonal reproduction of mosquito have generated a significant increase in cases. There is a circulation of two serotypes DEN-2 and DEN-4, where in previous years only the serotype DEN-2 circulated, both serotypes being of higher risk of severe dengue.
To date, more than 975,000 and 225 deaths have been reported in the Americas, with more than seven out of 10 cases reported in Paraguay and Brazil.
