Frank Gross Recreation Area

Area Status: Open

Located along the banks of Rock Creek and far from civilization, this area offers camping, hiking and trout fishing. Fishing in Rock Creek and Mill Creek for stocked and wild trout is popular. Hikers can enjoy the Appalachian Trail nearby and is easily accessed from Forest Service Road 69. Another beautiful hike is along the Benton MacKaye Trail to the north of Frank Gross; this trail crosses the Toccoa River on a suspension bridge that is 260 feet long.

The Frank Gross Recreation Area consists of eight camping sites. Each Campsite is equipped with a tent pad, picnic table, lantern pole, and grill. There are no water hook-ups, electric hook-ups or dump station available in the campground. All of the sites are within easy walking distance of the creek.

Operational Hours: Open 24 hours a day. Quiet hours 10pm - 6am.
Reservations: Reservations are required to camp in this campground. Reservations can be made through the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS). The website (www.Recreation.gov) offers convenient round the clock access to the Online Reservation Service or visitors may call NRRS at 1-877-444-6777 (toll free) between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.

You may reserve camp sites the same day as you arrive and as far as six (6) months in advance. Reservations are not available at the facility.
Fees: Camping: April 1 - December 31
$8.00 per night/site

Closed January 1 - March 31

  • Maximum 2 vehicles per campsite
  • Dogs must be leashed at all times.
Closest Towns: The nearest town is approximately 26 miles north, or 45 minutes, in Blue Ridge, GA. Here campers will find restaurants, grocery stores, etc.
Water: No drinking water provided
Restroom: 1 Vault facility
Passes: The Interagency Senior and Access Passes and the Golden Age and Access Passports are accepted. These passes entitle the pass holder to a 50% discount for single family campsites. Click here for detailed information on passes!

Directions:

From Blue Ridge, GA take US 515 north for 4 miles to GA Hwy. 60; turn right and go 2 miles to Morganton. In Morganton, turn right on GA 60 south for 14.5 miles. Turn right on Forest Service Road 69 (Chattahoochee National Fish Hatchery Road) for 5.2 miles to campground.

From Dahlonega, GA take GA Hwy. 60 north for 26 miles; turn left on Forest Service Road 69 for 5.2 miles to campground.
