FEATURED COLLECTION

Summaries of Research on Addiction Treatment and Recovery

Everyday, researchers publish the results of their important work surrounding many of the issues around addiction, addiction treatment, and recovery. Unfortunately, much of this research is published in proprietary journals that may be difficult for students, policymakers, patients and caregivers to access. The Recovery Research Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, regularly reviews this literature and publishes easy-to-read summaries of key research.

This featured collection provides a link to the Recovery Research Institute’s webpage that hosts these summaries as well as links to several studies that may be of particular interest to CLOUD visitors. Notably, each summary produced by the Institute includes detailed descriptions of the problem the study seeks to address, the methods used in the research, what the study found, and the implication of the findings for real world implementation. Each summary also includes a discussion of the bottom line and how the study’s findings may affect individuals and families seeking treatment and recovery, treatment professionals and the treatment system, researchers and scientists, and policymakers.

Evidence Based Strategies for Abatement of Harms from the Opioid Epidemic

This comprehensive report from leading experts in the field of addiction provides information designed to help policymakers and community leaders make decisions about how to spend money recovered through opioid-related lawsuits. The report reviews the evidence and identifies strategies that are "best bets" for spending opioid related dollars to address the opioid crisis in treatment, prevention, harm reduction, criminal justice settings, and for children and families. Also included is a list of evidence-based strategies, description of the features necessary to implement the identified strategies, cost estimates for implementation and program management, recommendations for using data to track program implementation, and discussion of how state policy structure may affect which strategies are feasible.

The American Opioid Epidemic in Special Populations: Five Examples

This discussion paper from the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic looks at how the opioid epidemic affects 5 special populations: justice-involved individuals, people living in rural communities, veterans, adolescents and young adults, and people who inject drugs. The paper describes barriers to accessing treatment, describes promising approaches for treating opioid use disorder in these special populations, and identifies research and action priorities to improve the delivery of SUD prevention, treatment and recovery for these special populations.
