Support for a community service programme

In August 2020, the OAED set in motion its Welfare-to-Work Programme 2020 for a period of eight months. The programme, which is targeted inter alia at vulnerable groups of low-income workers and the long-term unemployed, is due to end soon, with the loss of 36 500 jobs. This figure will be added to the already growing number of unemployed people in the wake of COVID-19 and the financial hardship it has caused. Furthermore, workers employed under the scheme, who cover the needs of municipalities, regions and other authorities, will not be eligible for any unemployment benefit, and their loss will further exacerbate social and economic problems.
In the light of the above:
- 1.Will the Commission support existing programmes to combat unemployment in order to show their solidarity with thousands of workers, their families and those affected?
- 2.Will it develop and support programmes to cushion the impact of these exceptional circumstances, which have been imposed against the will of workers, employees, professionals and entrepreneurs?
