In August 2020, the OAED set in motion its Welfare-to-Work Programme 2020 for a period of eight months. The programme, which is targeted inter alia at vulnerable groups of low-income workers and the long-term unemployed, is due to end soon, with the loss of 36 500 jobs. This figure will be added to the already growing number of unemployed people in the wake of COVID-19 and the financial hardship it has caused. Furthermore, workers employed under the scheme, who cover the needs of municipalities, regions and other authorities, will not be eligible for any unemployment benefit, and their loss will further exacerbate social and economic problems.
