BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A new report finds that Washington ranks fourth for largest pay gap based on gender.

The Forbes Advisor report says that, in general, women earn 16% less than men on average nationally, or 84 cents per dollar.

But that gap is significantly larger depending on what industry you look at. For example, legal occupations have an approximately 60% pay gap. Occupations in physical therapy and similar fields have the smallest gap at just 2% pay disparity.

In Washington state, women earn about $16,500 less than male counterparts. The top three spots are held by Wyoming, New Hampshire and Utah in order by biggest gap.

Women of color are consistently paid the least in rural areas, at 56 cents earned for every dollar earned by a rural white man.

Entry-level jobs have an over 18% pay disparity between genders. The report also says that the gap widens when education level is factored in. Women with a bachelor’s degree earn 74 cents on the dollar compared to men with the same degree.
