Deer Carcass Transportation

Import Restrictions Governing Carcasses

Importation of carcasses and parts from white-tailed deer, mule deer or elk are allowed as follows:

  1. De-boned meat or commercially-processed meat which may contain bones.
  2. Carcasses or parts of carcasses with the head or spinal column attached, if they are delivered within 72 hours after entry to a deer processor registered with the Indiana DNR or a taxidermist licensed by the Indiana DNR. Deer processors and taxidermists must dispose of parts and discarded tissue in accordance with DNR and BOAH regulations.
  3. Antlers, including antlers attached to skull caps, if the skull cap is cleaned of all brain and muscle tissue.
  4. Hides.
  5. Upper canine teeth, also known as "buglers", "whistlers", or "ivories".
  6. Heads, if they are delivered to a taxidermist licensed by the DNR within 72 hours after entry. A taxidermist accepting such a head must dispose of discarded tissue in accordance with BOAH regulations.
  7. Finished taxidermist mounts.

Hunters who wish to process their own deer or elk cannot bring in the head, spinal column, or small intestine. Deer heads and carcasses with the spinal column or small intestine intact must be delivered to a licensed taxidermist or deer processor registered with the Indiana DNR within 72 hours of bringing them into Indiana.
