We asked

For your views on new proposals for transport improvements on and around the A457 Dudley Road.

You said

The new proposals were generally well received by most respondents - 61% of respondents either fully or partially support the overall scheme.

The inclusion of bus lanes and cycling facilities was welcomed by many, although some people were concerned this would reduce capacity for general traffic. Conversely, some respondents felt that the scheme would increase capacity for general traffic and increase traffic speed.

Some specific concerns were raised about on street parking in Zone A. Please note, this scheme does not propose any changes to the existing unrestricted on-street residential parking

We did

We plan to deliver part of this scheme, around Western Road and the access to the Soho Loop site, in 2021/22. This supports the occupation of the first homes in Soho Loop in late 2022.

The rest of the scheme will be delivered at a later date.

Reports on this scheme were presented to Birmingham City Council Cabinet on 16 March 2021 (items 12 and 13).

Overview

Over the next five years, lots of new housing will be built near Dudley Road, increasing the number of people wanting to travel in the area.

We are therefore planning to improve the A457 Dudley Road to:

  • upgrade facilities for pedestrians and cyclists,
  • provide new bus lanes,
  • reduce traffic congestion through junctions.

This is a revised scheme for the Dudley Road, following public feedback, and supports the principles set out in the Emergency Birmingham Transport Plan.

Walking, cycling and public transport are vital tools in the difficult tasks of solving congestion, air quality and our climate crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has also changed people’s habits and further highlighted the importance of walking and cycling as safe and sustainable ways to travel.

What are we proposing?

The A457 Dudley Road Improvement Scheme includes upgraded junctions, new bus lanes, new segregated cycle routes, widened footways and a new footbridge alongside Spring Hill Canal Bridge.
