About the Position

Performs expert-level professional engineering on Public Works projects. Acts as an assistant to a major division head in the Public Works Department. Serves as a technical consultant to the City Engineer on complex engineering projects. Projects future engineering needs of the City and conducts long-range planning. Oversees the preparation of designs, plans, specifications, and estimates of costs. Develops and implements budgets. Represents the department at meetings with the public and elected officials. Performs related work as assigned.

Information Specific to this Position: 
The City of St. Paul's Department of Public Works Street Maintenance Division is seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to provide technical direction and related administrative work in support of street maintenance operations.

Primary Responsibilities:  
  • Provides leadership to management personnel 
  • Lead and manage the hiring process of maintenance operations positions
  • Oversee operations staff performance
  • Serve as department and/or division representative for emergency operations
  • Provides technical oversight and development for maintenance operations
  • Assists with operations management including scope development, cost estimating, scheduling, and controlling/monitoring the budget
  • Communicates through written and oral presentation media to diverse audiences
The eligible list created from this exam will be used to fill Civil Engineer IV positions as they become available in other areas of Public Works: Street Engineering and Construction, Traffic Engineering and Operations, Bridge Engineering and Maintenance, Sewer Utility, and Transportation Planning and Safety.

Position Requirements

Must possess and maintain Licensure as a Professional Civil Engineer in the state of Minnesota and six years of professional civil engineering experience. At least two years of which must be as a Civil Engineer III level or equivalent.

Licensure in the State of Minnesota as a Professional Civil Engineer is required by date of appointment.

Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.
