Peer Support

This collection features resources to assist substance use treatment (SUD) providers, health care systems, and community organizations create and manage peer support programs. Peer support professionals are individuals with lived experience of addiction and recovery. Research shows that peer support services are beneficial to helping individuals engage in treatment and maintain recovery from addiction. This collection includes general information about peer support; toolkits for creating and managing peer support service programs; resources designed to help establish effective supervision policies for peer support specialists; and information about peer support for youth, families experiencing SUD who are also involved in the child welfare system, and peer support programs in justice settings.

Principles for the Use of Funds From Opioid Litigation

This report from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health describes five principles policymakers can use to ensure the best use of funds from opioid litigation. The principles include:

  1. Spend money to save lives
  2. Use evidence to guide spending
  3. Invest in youth prevention
  4. Focus on racial equity, and
  5. Develop a fair and transparent process for deciding where to spend the funding

Coercion Related to Mental Health and Substance Use in the Context of Intimate Partner Violence: A Toolkit for Screening, Assessment and Brief Counseling in Primary Care and Behavioral Health Settings


This trauma-informed toolkit from the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma and Mental Health assists clinicians in screening patients or clients for coercion related to mental health and substance use in the context of intermate partner violence. Created by the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma and Mental Health, the toolkit is intended to be used for screening, assessment and brief intervention in healthcare, mental health and substance use disorder treatment settings. It includes guidance about asking about mental health and substance use coercion and recommendations for responding to a positive screening response. The toolkit also includes information about safety planning and ensuring patient privacy and confidentiality.

Caring for People with Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders in Primary Care Settings: Proceedings of a Workshop


This report details the findings from NASEM’s workgroup on providing substance use disorder and behavioral health care in primary care settings. The report defines the essential components of treating depression, alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder in the primary care setting, describes opportunities to build the health care workforce and delivery models for this care, and discusses financial incentives and payment structures for these care models.
