Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and U.S. Rep. Darren Soto to Speak with Students on Transgender Day of Visibility and Highlight Impact of American Rescue Plan Funds in Orlando District

On Thursday, March 31, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will travel to Orlando with U.S. Rep. Darren Soto to speak with students and families on Transgender Day of Visibility. They will visit a local school to learn more about how the district is using Title I funds and American Rescue Plan (ARP) investments to support K-12 students’ recovery from the pandemic.

Secretary Cardona and Rep. Soto will meet with LGBTQI+ students and family members in a closed press, roundtable discussion to hear about the impact recent anti-LGBTQI+ legislation has on their communities and school experiences. This will also coincide with National Transgender Day of Visibility. Following Gov. DeSantis signing the Parental Rights in Education bill, Secretary Cardona shared this statement expressing the Biden Administration’s support for LGBTQI+ students. A press gaggle with Secretary Cardona and Rep. Soto will follow this event.

Afterwards, Secretary Cardona and Rep. Soto will tour Ventura Elementary School and participate in a roundtable conversation with teachers about Title I funding and the use of ARP funds in the district. To advance the goal of providing a high-quality education to every student, the President's Budget for fiscal year 2023 includes $36.5 billion for Title I, including $20.5 billion in discretionary funding and $16 billion in mandatory funding, more than doubling the program's funding compared to the 2021 enacted level.
