Highlights

Cyber Program is building an Arcade with the grant money they have received from Educate Fairfax, Edison PTA, and Foundation for Applied Technical Education, Inc. (FATE). A group of students went to George Mason University to see Corner Pocket, their game room and arcade, for inspiration and guidance.

Happy Lunar New Year! Welcome the Year of the Snake! As the most important holiday for Chinese and many other Asian communities, Lunar New Year is a time for joy, tradition, and new beginnings. This year, the celebration ran from Wednesday, January 29, to Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Our Chinese classes created lanterns and written lucky poems using traditional Chinese calligraphy brushes. We’ve also decorated the World Languages hallway with lanterns and Spring Couplets to bring festive cheer. Everyone is welcome to stop by and explore the rich traditions of Chinese New Year! Wishing you a joyful and prosperous Year of the Snake! Gōng xǐ fā cái! (Wishing you happiness and prosperity!)

The Criminal Justice program took their first of two visits to the FBI Headquarters for an incredibly informative tour.

About twenty of our ambassadors also attended a communication workshop with iContact Coaching at West Potomac alongside students from Falls Church, Marshall, and West Potomac Academies.

Academy Staff and Students hosted the annual Open House. What an amazing turn out from our community; we hope you enjoyed the programs as much as we enjoyed having you here.

February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) month, check out the bulletin board created by our Teachers For Tomorrow Class to educate students on CTE courses at the academy.

Last week was National School Counseling Week, where students, faculty, and families showed appreciation for our Career Counselor, Ms. Deedy, and Career Experience Specialist, Ms. Hinkhouse.

We will continue to share important information and good news through these newsletters, our Edison Academy website, and social media platforms, Twitter(link is external), Instagram(link is external), and Facebook(link is external).

Edison Academy Families,

It's hard to believe that Tuesday, January 28, marks the end of the second quarter. This is a reminder that Lunar New Year falls at quarter end on Wednesday, January 29. The day will be a teacher work day and there will be no school for students. See the complete school year calendar(link is external). Teachers will be attending professional development and finalizing grades.

Some of our students will be participating in Skills USA competitions on Wednesday, January 29; we will be sure to include the results of these competitions in our February newsletter.

Please join us for our Edison Academy Open House on Saturday, February 1, from 10 am - 1 pm. For more details please see below.

It has been a busy month at the academy. We started the new year with an extended break, but since being back, there has been a lot of activity. The Academy Ambassadors and staff have been visiting other schools to inform students and families about our amazing programs. We have also hosted a number of great guests, in human and and dog form.

We will continue to share important information and good news through these newsletters, our Edison Academy website, and social media platforms, Instagram(link is external), Facebook(link is external), and X(link is external) (formerly Twitter).

We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year.

Classes resume on Monday, January 6, 2025. See the complete school year calendar.(link is external)

Edison Academy Families,

We have much to be thankful for at Edison Academy and are most grateful for our students. Our Culinary Arts students have been busy making fresh pies and baking bread in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our Electrical students are offering their services to our teachers, staff, and students. Please see Electrical Repair Services below for more details. Our students continue to amaze us each day with all of their strengths. Thank you for sharing your students with us.

Just a reminder that Tuesday , November 26, is a regular school day. There is no school on Wednesday, November 27, Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29.

Thanksgiving is a time for reflection for all of our blessings.  Wishing you and your families a safe and joyful holiday with friends and family.

Sincerely,

Monica Bentley, Academy Administrator

Welcome Ms. Hinkhouse to Edison Academy

With nearly two decades in education, Sarah Hinkhouse is an experienced and passionate educator specializing in Career and Technical Education, with a focus on Entrepreneurship and Marketing. She has a passion for guiding students in career exploration and development, as well as industry credentialing and post-secondary education options. Sarah most recently led courses at Oakton High School, including dual-enrollment Entrepreneurship classes, where she actively engaged students in applied learning experiences and prioritized building relationships.

In addition to classroom instruction, Sarah has held various leadership roles that enhance student and school success. As a CTSO advisor, Sarah has supported students in their endeavors as leaders and competitors, as well as assisted in the planning of countless events.  She has overseen Virginia’s largest DECA chapters, supporting award-winning community service projects, and facilitating multiple gold-certified school-based enterprises, giving students hands-on business experience.

Sarah has been integral to curriculum development, contributing to Fairfax County’s resources for entrepreneurship, marketing, workplace readiness, as well as the internship programs. When designing curriculum, she focuses on material that challenges students to problem solve, critically think, and collaborate all while developing professionalism. Her work on state-level curriculum with the Virginia Department of Education has shaped the fields of Digital and Social Media Marketing and Advanced Cybersecurity in Marketing.  As a leader with the Virginia Association of Marketing Educators, Sarah held multiple board positions, including President, overseeing annual conferences and managing key resources for educators statewide. Sarah was recognized for her contributions to and passion for education when she was named Virginia’s Marketing Educator of the Year in 2017 and was part of Oakton’s Curriculum Team of the Year in 2024.

Upon falling in love with teaching, Sarah completed her Masters in Career and Technical Education from Virginia Tech to complement her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing. Sarah combines academic credentials with practical expertise as a career switcher to inspire students and colleagues alike. When she is not at school, Sarah enjoys being an aunt, traveling and cheering for the Green Bay Packers.

Good News and Events

To see what has been happening at Edison Academy, please take a look at our announcementsblogs, and events calendar on our Edison Academy website. You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @EdisonAcademy to stay up to date with announcements and events.

Lanyards

All students that are not Edison High School students who attend Edison Academy have received an Edison Academy lanyard. It is expected that all feeder Academy students display their lanyards around their neck when entering the building, in the hallways, and when they are exiting the building. This was shared with all students at our beginning of the year orientation.  This presentation has also been posted in Schoology by our teachers. Moving forward, if your student needs a replacement lanyard there will be a $5.00 fee.

Attendance

Please contact the Edison Academy attendance office if your student will be absent or staying at the base school due to an altered schedule. Our telephone number is 703-924-8137 or email us at edisonacademy.attendance@fcps.edu. (link sends email) This is in addition to informing the base school attendance office.

Edison Academy Parking

Students may not park at Edison Academy unless they have received an approved parking permit. Academy students with approved parking permits may only park in the parking spaces labeled A1-A35 near Door 13.

Please review the parking agreement and consequences below.

STUDENT PARKING AGREEMENT

  1. All students who park on campus must purchase a student parking permit.  Any student who parks on campus without a permit will receive a $25 fine.  Continued violations will result in booting or towing of the student’s vehicle.  All towing is done by a commercial towing company.  Edison High School is not responsible for damage to towed vehicles.
  2. Students will receive a $25 for the first parking violation.  Students will receive a $50 fine for the second parking violation and will have their parking permit revoked on the third violation.
  3. Academy students must promptly vacate their assigned academy parking space at the end of their academy session and not return for the remainder of the school day. Students who park in other parking spots are in violation of the student parking agreement and are subject to fines, booting, revocation of parking privileges, and/or towing.
  4. Students must display parking permits from the rear-view mirror, facing outwards, to be identifiable.
  5. Students may not return to their vehicle during the school day without the approval of a school official.
  6. Students must always adhere to speed limits and safe driving behavior.  Revocation of parking privileges will occur for reckless driving.
  7. Students, including car-pool members who leave school grounds without permission (properly checked out through attendance) during the school day, will be referred to their administrator.  The vehicle will be subject to a search by school security personnel and/or administrators upon returning to campus as well as possible revocation of parking privileges.
  8. Parking permit fees are not refundable for revoked permits.
  9. Student drivers must follow the directions of school officials directing traffic in the parking lot.
  10. Students are subject to all state and county traffic laws, including the report of traffic accidents and/or damage to other vehicles that occur at the school parking lots.  It is illegal to pass a school bus that is loading or unloading.
  11. Student parking privileges are subject to being revoked at any time by an administrator for disciplinary reasons for but not limited to behavior and attendance school.
