The number of deaths from ongoing strong rains in Tanzania increased from 30 to 40 on Saturday.

Tanga regional police commander, Edward Bukombe, said a car carrying 10 people got swept away by the water on Saturday as the driver attempted to drive through a flooded rive in Handeni district, making the number of deaths hit 40.

Bukombe was quoted saying that "The driver was warned not to cross over the flooded river because its bridge had broken down but he insisted driving through".

In the past week, police said that 30 people died in floods in Morogoro and Tanga regions.
