In an historic first, tech companies from across the globe have committed to developing AI safely. On day one of the #AISeoulSummit, 16 leading tech companies from OpenAI to Meta have signed up to the ‘Frontier AI Safety Commitments.’ AI tech companies will each publish safety frameworks on how they will measure risks. The companies have committed to not developing or deploying AI models if the risks cannot be sufficiently mitigated. We are announcing new grants for research into systemic AI safety. Initially backed by up to £8.5 million, this programme will fund researchers to advance the science underpinning AI safety. The world needs to think carefully about how to adapt our infrastructure and systems for a new world in which AI is embedded in everything we do. A new agreement between 10 countries plus the EU, reached today at the AI Seoul Summit, has committed nations to work together to launch an international network to accelerate the advancement of the science of AI safety. The nations will forge a common understanding of AI safety and align their work on research, standards and testing.
