A few weeks ago, during floor action, the Senate took up DFI’s request legislation, SB 5280, protecting consumers of virtual currency kiosks. The bill and its floor debate were the subject of a story on TVW’s Legislative Update for Feb. 26. (The story begins at the 6:30 mark.) The bill was passed on a vote of 29-17 and now goes to the House for its consideration. What is this bill and what will it do for consumers? Virtual Currency ATMs have been used by criminals to defraud unsuspecting people who they persuade to convert their savings to crypto currency, which is then stolen and quickly moved overseas. The bill would put a daily transaction limit of $1,000 in place, cap fees, require detailed receipting, and strengthen licensure provisions.
