Florida Gray Squirrel and Rabbit Hunting

Get started small game hunting

Getting started in hunting is easier than you may think and hunting gray squirrels or rabbits is a great way to begin. Small game hunting also provides an opportunity for seasoned hunters to introduce youth or adults to hunting and conservation. It can even provide a window back into the outdoors for lapsed hunters with busy lifestyles.

Gray squirrel and rabbit hunting usually requires little planning and gear other than a place to go and a shotgun, .22-caliber rifle or airgun.

Where to hunt small game

You can find good places to hunt close by on small tracts of private property as well as public lands, many of which are convenient to major urban areas. Florida’s public hunting system totals more than 6 million acres with over 170 wildlife management areas (WMAs). Many of these WMAs offer a small game hunting season where quota permits are not required. All that is needed is a hunting license and management area permit.
