New York state’s sales tax haul from local governments grew to $23 billion last year, driven by heavy spending in the Big Apple, according to a new report by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.
Sales tax collections were up 4.2% in 2023 compared with the previous year, a nearly $919 million bump. New York City saw a 5.9% increase in its sales taxes in part because of its rebounding tourism sector, even as sales in large industry groups—like electronics and personal care stores—have yet to fully recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, DiNapoli said.
