DAR ES SALAAM, April 23 (Xinhua) -- At least two people have been killed and 50 houses have been swept away by flash floods in Tanzania's northern safari capital of Arusha, an official said on Thursday.

"Two people were killed by flash floods early Thursday and scores of others were made homeless after the floods washed away at least 50 houses," said Jerry Muro, Arumeru district commissioner in Arusha region.

The official said the duo was killed after their house was knocked down by a landslide from Mount Meru, Tanzania's second highest mountain.

Muro said tens of hundreds of passengers travelling between the country's northern regions of Arusha and Kilimanjaro, and Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Morogoro regions were stranded for more than six hours after the highway between the destinations was flooded.

Muro said the flooded stretch of road was near the Kilimanjaro International Airport, almost halfway between the cities of Arusha and Moshi.

In March, at least 3,500 houses and 6,600 hectares of farms were swept away by flash floods in one week caused by ongoing rains in Rufiji district in the Coast Region. Enditem
