The current coronavirus pandemic has placed our communities in unique and uncertain situations, leaving many people in the dark about what they can do, and what they should do. We want to ensure carers across the city know what support is available to them given the changes to regular services. This bulletin will be shared weekly - aiming to provide the most up to date information and guidance relating to carers in Manchester.

Manchester Carers Network & Manchester City Council Support 
We're still here if you need us...

As lockdown restrictions begin to ease, we understand you may be feeling a little anxious about the world opening up again. 

A number of organisations; including Manchester Carers Network and Manchester City Council, are providing telephone support services during the coronavirus pandemic.

Manchester City Council's Community Hub

Are you aged over 70, living alone, struggling to make ends meet, self-isolating or generally in need of advice or support?

Manchester City Council's emergency support hub is available from Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm and Saturday 10am - 2pm.

They can help with delivery of food and medicine, combating loneliness, payment of fuel bills and more.

Shopping Guidance and Support
Community Grocers 

Community Grocers are a redistribution scheme for food and household items that would otherwise go to waste. They look and feel like a traditional shop with members paying £2.50 for around £12 worth of groceries.

They are available in Miles Platting, Fallowfield, Gorton, Hulme, Coverdale and Newbank and Anson.

Benefits Advice and Financial Support
Rental evictions ban - the government has extended the suspension of new evictions until 23 August. 

The Coronavirus Job Retention scheme (furlough) will reduce each month until the scheme ends on the 31 October.
 

United Utilities have extended their 'Back on Track' scheme to cover those who have been financially impacted by Covid19. 

Statutory Sick Pay - people shielding are still entitled to this if they meet people from another household, however they will no longer be entitled to SSP from 1 August. 
 

Benefit repayments that were temporarily stopped are now starting again. 

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) reviews and renewals are starting up again.

Tips to help if you are worried about coronavirus

With so many changes happening week by week, and a gradual lift on lockdown restrictions, you are bound to feel a mix of emotions. The NHS and One You have released some tips to help you cope, from staying in touch with friends and family to looking after your body. Click here to find out more. 

Greater Manchester Mental Health helpline 

Although things are changing very quickly, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust are still there to respond to the needs of all service users and carers.

They have extended their FREE helpline to 24/7 which you can call any time, day or night, if you feel your mental health is beginning to suffer. The number is 0800 453 0285. Click here for more details.

Shine...shining a light on young carers in Manchester and Salford 

According to the BBC, there are estimated to be over 700,000 young carers in the UK (youngminds.org). The responsibilities of being a young carer can bring lots of challenges including isolation and low-self esteem.

Gaddum's Shine is a support project for young carers aged 5-16 in Manchester and Salford.

It provides a range of help and support including initial assessments, one to one sessions, group activities and fun events so the young carers can have a much needed break, an online app and information hub, mentoring and more.

Free computers for families 

A huge thank you to My Outsourced IT, who are donating computers to families that are either on a low income or benefits and are in need of more devices during the coronavirus pandemic.

The computers are offered free of charge, but they only ask that you request one if you need one.

Carers paid leave consultation 

The government are seeking views on giving unpaid carers a new right to a week of annual leave.
 
The carers paid leave consultation is open to all unpaid carers, employers, relevant organisations and charities.

Kooth - free online counselling and emotional well-being support for children and young people in Manchester

Manchester Community Central - advice and guidance including info on how to volunteer with groups responding to (COVID-19).
 

BAME communities - information for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities during the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
 

Women's Aid - women and children at risk of domestic violence at home during the coronavirus crisis. 
 

Greater Manchester Police - information regarding the impact of Coronavirus on areas such as: Courts and tribunals, visas and temporary residents, funerals and places of worship etc.
