The Commission’s upcoming Europe’s Beating Cancer plan and its definition on obesity
3.2.2021
Question for written answer E-000669/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Pernille Weiss (PPE)
According to Eurostat, 59 % of adults in the Member States are currently living with pre-obesity or obesity. Treating obesity like other chronic diseases can prevent up to 20 % of preventable adult cancers, including cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, endometrium, liver and kidney – all priorities of the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
- 1.Will the Commission take action by ensuring its Beating Cancer Plan is aligned with the foresight report and the EU4Health programme, which currently set obesity as a non-communicable chronic disease and as a key priority to be addressed in terms of primary prevention, treatment, long-term management and control?
- 2.Will it work to ensure that upcoming implementation measures on obesity under the Farm2Fork Strategy are also aligned with the approach of the foresight report?
- 3.Will it consult with the scientific community for obesity and with MEPs on ensuring that appropriate measures with successful outcomes are included in the upcoming foresight report and Cancer Plan dashboards?
