Beltrami News: April Edition

COVID-19 Response

Beltrami residents - We are all in this together! We sincerely hope everyone is staying safe and healthy through these unprecedented times. We as an organization are still trying to figure out how we can continue serving the community and offer resources to the neighborhood. It will be the main topic of our April Board Meeting, so please join us via Zoom if you have ideas on what we can be doing! Also, feel free to e-mail us office@discoverbeltrami.org to share your thoughts. And thank you to those who have already reached out! We truly have a wonderful neighborhood and community here in Northeast.

Take the Census

Don't forget to fill out your 2020 Census!  The Census impacts how billions of dollars are distributed across Minnesota. It determines funding for public health, schools, housing, transit, and infrastructure (roads/bridges, water/sewer, gas/electric). An accurate count means better serving people where they live. Specifically, every person we don’t count is $28,000 our communities won’t receive over the next ten years.

Find more information, in English, Somali, Spanish, and Hmong at mncounts.com.

Community Garden Accepting Applications

Beltrami’s Community Garden is located at 1213 Spring St NE

Get a plot for the upcoming season for only $20, plus a $10 refundable deposit.  This fee pays for the plot and water. For application and more information about the community garden: Click Here

Applications must be mailed to the BNC at PO Box 18297, Minneapolis, MN 55418. Applications are not considered complete unless the full $30 payment ($20 plus refundable $10 deposit) is submitted with the application. For those who submit their material after all the spots are full, your application and un-deposited check will be returned to you.

BNC Strategic Planning Survey

Every few years BNC undertakes extensive strategic planning to align our priorities with that of the community. We began this exercise a few months ago, and it is more important now than ever, with our current environment, and possible changes to funding with Neighborhoods 2020.

We planned to visit with every resident through meetings, events, and door-knocking, however due to COVID-19 we are unsure when that may take place.

In the meantime, we have put together a brief (less than 5 minute) survey and would like to hear from you on what events, programs and services you participate in and what we should focus on as an organization.

TAKE THE SURVEY

Interested in earning up to $600 supporting your neighborhood and community? Beltrami Neighborhood Council is launching a new and exciting program where residents can earn money by being engaged. The goals are to build relationships between BNC and the Beltrami renter population, and also increase livability and community connection for people who rent homes in the neighborhood.

Anyone currently renting in the Beltrami neighborhood is eligible. Participants will sign a contract committing to participating in five (5) hours of service projects, training/education, and/or civic participation per month. Participants will receive $100 per month.

Neighborhoods 2020

The draft Neighborhoods 2020 Program Guidelines are now available for review and public comment. The official public comment period has been extended through July 15th, 2020.

Since 2016, the City of Minneapolis, NCR department has been holding conversations with community and neighborhood leaders and elected officials about the needs and goals of our growing and vibrant city and identifying the role that neighborhoods should play in meeting them.

This will affect future funding for organizations like BNC. Share your opinions on how you feel about the proposed changes.

Update to E Hennepin Ave Planned Project

In an effort to connect a long existing bicycle network gap and create an enhanced pedestrian environment along East Hennepin Ave, Public Works will redesign the crossing at 5th Ave SE and Pierce St NE in 2020. Hennepin County will be resurfacing East Hennepin Ave from 8th St SE to Stinson Blvd; this will reduce the number of travel lanes from 4 to 3 and add buffered bicycle facilities for a portion of the corridor.

Recommended Layout

The proposed design includes curb-extensions, new ADA pedestrian ramps and improved vehicle sight-lines. A new full traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of 5th Avenue South East and East Hennepin Avenue, in addition to new APS and crosswalks. Hennepin County will continue a four to three lane conversion through the project extents from 8th Street South East to Johnson Street North East. Pedestrian scale lighting will be installed as a part of this project

Backyard Camp Coming to Beltrami

At Backyard Camp, 4-12 year olds have the chance to work with an abundance of handcrafting materials, practice building new worlds and relationships, and learn new skills through concentrated exploration of their environment.

Week-long summer day camps allow children to choose their own adventures while being physically active, spending time with nature, and unplugging from technology. Camp sessions are unique in that campers make their own decisions about how to spend their time, supported by trained Playworker staff on site.

BNC, partnered with Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, is offering scholarships to help pay for Beltrami residents. Please contact Heidi Miller (hmiller@minneapolisparks.org) if interested.
