Continuous Recruitment Examinations

Overview  

Applications for most continuous recruitment examinations are accepted continuously, with no application deadline. Examinations are conducted whenever there is a need for qualified individuals.

Minimum Education and Work Experience Required  

These are jobs that are filled through continuous recruitment examinations. In order to qualify for the examination, you must meet the minimum qualifications of educational and work experience, which is listed on the examination announcement.

Correction Officer Trainee

Correction Officers are responsible for the custody and security as well as the safety and well-being of incarcerated individuals in State Correctional Facilities, Shock Incarceration Correctional Facilities, Work Release Centers and Drug Treatment Campuses.

Information Technology Specialist

Information Technology Specialists perform or assist in performing technical and agency program support IT activities related to network and system design, configuration, maintenance, and security; customer support; business/systems analysis and design which may include web site development and administration of a transactional, dynamic, or interactive web site; and the design, development and administration of database systems.

Optometric Technician

Optometric Technicians provide eye and vision care services to patients. Based on State licensing regulations and assignment, the positions measure facial features to ensure proper sizing of lenses and frames, advise patients on frame and spectacle lens selection, order frames and lenses, check lens prescriptions for accuracy upon return from the laboratory, dispense patient prescriptions after making all necessary adjustments and modifications, and advise patients on contact lens selection, application, and cleaning of contact lenses based on the eye care provider's prescription.

Plant Utilities Assistant

Plant Utilities Assistants assist in the operation, maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air-conditioning and electrical distribution.

Transportation Construction Inspector »

Transportation Construction Inspectors perform testing on various materials used in the construction of roads and bridges, support professional engineering staff in construction compliance activities, and perform construction and/or material inspections for assigned projects.

Verbatim Reporter

Verbatim Reports take and transcribe verbatim records at hearings, formal meetings and conferences in judicial and quasi-judicial matters, and in other venues where verbatim transcription of spoken material or audio recordings is required.

Advanced Degree Required or Professional Certification and/or Licensing Required

These jobs are also filled through continuous recruitment examinations. In order to qualify for the examination, you must have an advanced degree in the area(s) of study listed on the examination announcement. For some jobs, in order to qualify, you may also be required to possess professional certification or licensure as listed on the examination announcement.

Actuary Positions

Actuaries perform actuarial computations relative to insurance plans and rates of contribution to pension funds, and for the preparation of the mortality, disability and other demographic tables upon which such calculations are based. Incumbents determine reserves to provide future benefits and analyze sources of earnings under policies and contracts to determine proper rates of dividends and other indeterminate credits and charges.

Auditor 1 (Abandoned Property) | Auditor Trainee 1 (Abandoned Property)

Auditor 1 (Abandoned Property) review banks, insurance companies, utilities, stockbrokers, collateral loan makers or any other organization that may hold unclaimed property to ensure accurate and complete reporting and remittance of unclaimed property to the State Comptroller.

Auditor 1 (Municipal) review annual financial information submitted by local government entities, conduct financial and performance audits; provide technical assistance, and other functions analyzing and evaluating local government fiscal health.

Auditor Trainee 1 (Tax) | Auditor 1 (Tax)

Auditor 1 (Tax) perform on-site field audits and examinations of taxpayers' books, records, and substantiating data to determine compliance with various articles of the New York State Tax Law.

Engineering Positions

Engineering careers are available to college graduates in engineering and engineering technology, individuals who have passed the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination, and New York State licensed and currently registered Professional Engineers.

Legal Specialties

Attorneys may perform a wide range of assignments and the tasks performed vary considerably. There are some who as members of a very small legal office receive wide ranging assignments, while others, usually in larger offices, receive a more limited variety of work.

Licensed Psychologist

Licensed Psychologists provide professional psychological services and/or supervise psychological services provided by clinical and non-licensed psychology staff. License and currently registered to practice psychology in New York State required.

Nursing Positions »

Nurses (registered professional nurses) conduct health assessments; diagnose and treat an individuals' responses to actual, potential, or diagnosed health problems through the provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and execute medical regimens prescribed by a licensed health care provider. Nurses also serve on interdisciplinary health care teams and health related committees to plan and implement health care.

Optician

Plant Utilities Engineer

Plant Utilities Engineers operates, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, tests, and calibrates mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air-conditioning and electrical distribution in the most efficient and safe manner possible. Incumbents also make recommendations on major overhauls and replacement of equipment and initiate activity relating to energy conservation projects.

State Program Examiner | State Program Examiner Trainee 1

State Program Examiners assist in the financial and performance audits of all state departments, agencies, institutions and authorities, directed at financial accountability, management effectiveness and efficiency, and program performance.

Teachers deal with learners having a broad range of physical and mental aptitudes, abilities, interests, social and academic backgrounds and ages in addition to some behavioral physical, mental or emotional problems. - Applications will be accepted during October of each year.

Vulnerable Persons Protection Specialist 1

Open to Current State Employees  

There are also continuous recruitment examinations open to all qualified current State employees. These examinations are called promotion or transition examinations. Some examinations are conducted by the Department of Civil Service, while others are conducted by the agencies where the positions exist. There is no application deadline for these examinations, which are held based on the need for qualified individuals.

Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement (HELP) & New York State Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS)

To address staffing issues in State agencies, the Department of Civil Service implemented the HELP program in April 2023 to streamline the appointment process. In May 2024 an expanded NY HELPS program will officially launch. At this time, the titles included in the program do not require examination. Some of the titles approved for HELP and NY HELPS were previously Continuous Recruitment examinations.
